| The reluctant hero. |
A city on the Edge. |
The faces of evil. |
The consequences of Sephiroth's actions live on two years later...
Following the events of
Final Fantasy VII, people have tried rebuilding their lives as a result of everything that had happened to them. The people of Midgar flocked away, and built themselves a new city, Edge, using materials from the metropolis itself, until the centre of Shinra's commercial empire became nothing more than a ghost town.
In the two years since the Holy spell failed to prevent Meteor destroying the planet, and the last-minute intervention of the Lifestream to protect humanity, people have began showing symptoms of an eventually deadly disease: Geostigma (known slightly less cryptically as "Planet Scar Syndrome" in Japanese). The first cases of Geostigma arose as soon as the Lifestream burst out of the planet, and many people (especially the weak and elderly) died almost instantly from this initial outbreak, though as time passed, the sufferers (mostly children) seem to suffer for longer periods of time. The disease in these cases manifests as black rashes across the victim's skin, which begins to ooze black pus. In time, Geostigma poses too much of a strain on the body, and the victim dies.
After his symbollic defeat of Sephiroth, Cloud moved in with Tifa and Marlene, eventually "adopting" Denzel, an orphan who had contracted Geostigma. Cloud then set up Strife's Delivery Service, using his motorbike to deliver packages for clients, and even after moving out of his home (and into the Sector 5 Church in Midgar), calls for Strife's Delivery Service would still initially go through to Tifa's bar, where Tifa herself would then put them through to the young man who no longer answers his phone. Cloud the continued to become more and more distant from those who care about him, especially his assumed family: Tifa, Marlene, and Denzel.
As the film begins, Cloud picks up an answering machine message on his mobile phone informing him that Reno - of the Turks - wants to do business with him, leading Cloud to clash with three mysterious men on motorbikes, and a plot that will bring Cloud to confront his most painful memories.
